Our 3 Favorite Gluten Free Resources in the Houston Area
Mary's Gluten FreeDue to an ill-planned elimination diet, I found myself needing two gluten free, dairy-free, and egg-free birthday cakes. I didn't trust myself to deliver something edible on such short notice, so we turned to Mary's Gluten Free on Gladebrook Dr. in Houston. We tried a vegan chocolate cake with non-dairy vanilla icing, a vegan chocolate cake with non-dairy chocolate icing, some vegan chocolate cupcakes, and some chocolate truffles. We were very happy with all of these items. The customer service was excellent as well. I had a vague idea of how I wanted my daughter's cake to look and the rep spent lots of time with me fleshing everything out.
Gluten Free HoustonNow we normally use Rudy's for sandwich bread, hamburger buns, and hot dog buns, but before we discovered Rudy's at our local Kroger, we used to get all those convenience foods from Gluten Free Houston on Wirt Rd. They also sell muffins, pies, cookies, and other goodies.
Fogo de ChaoFogo de Chao is a Brazilian steakhouse with tableside service. If you love meat-- which we've now given up on our vegan trial-- you will adore Fogo de Chao. It isn't technically a gluten free restaurant, but almost everything in the place is gluten free. At the time of our last visit, only two items contained gluten, and they were both on the salad bar. Make sure you ask your server, but you should be safe eating almost everything here. My personal favorites are the cheesy bread (yummy!) and the garlic mashed potatoes. Meat options include filet mignon, chicken, lamb, ribeye, and sirloin.
There are other gluten free options in Houston, but these are the ones we use most regularly. What are your favorite local gluten free bakeries, restaurants, or stores?
